I adapted the same profiles for use in Lightroom and it works perfectly. However, on the Adobe side, creating custom profiles is easy, intuitive, and flawless. It's kinda revealed how disjointed a lot of the tools are in the way they engage the C1 color management pipeline. Because Capture One's internal color management system is a black box, making them work the way I want has been virtually impossible even when I get it almost perfect, something breaks because of the way a particular toolset works. I was developing some custom camera profiles that are a bit more complicated than simple chart calibrations. On the color side, my situation is a bit more niche. If you're using a 4k screen, it's frustration abound.

I'm on an M1 Mac now and I thought that would solve the problems, but it hasn't. Capture One has become inexplicably slow and buggy, irrespective of hardware. I'm finding myself back in Lightroom quite often now for the same reasons I originally left Lightroom for: it's faster and better supports my color process. So maybe I might tackle LrC again this year.

I moved to C1 because of color and frustration with LR's performance (even on a high end Mac Pro cheesegrater or Windows box, was always sluggish).īut I did keep the Adobe subscription, and every so often, I'd pull a shoot into LR just to look at how Classic is, and they have absolutely been making big strides in things like you mention, the AI masking, performance, etc.Ĭ1's cataloging, DAM support is horrible (I hear that it is better in 23, which I have, but have not had my camera out in a few weeks), and I ended up purchasing Photo Mechanic Plus to bridge the gap, but honestly, LR's People mode was perfect for me (I do a lot of shooting in the fire and EMS community, training, public relations events, etc., and will regularly get requests from departments I know saying "hey, do you have any pictures of X we can use for their retirement"?) Tagging works, but a few hours spend training People was so much more painless.

LR definitely has a wider set of presets (and more of those are actually becoming the "type" of preset I like - the layered building blocks, rather than "here's 10 arbitrary presets"). Overall I’m mostly happy, it took me awhile to get my preset conveyed over to LR and it’s still a work in progress, but ultimately as a working photographer Capture One just let me down too many times with poor performance and falling behind the competition. But the difference now is such that the benefits listed above outweigh the slight boost in IQ. Since switching back to LR I’m seeing my editing time drop significantly, as in a wedding taking me 1/3rd the amount of time.ģ) Better Fuji Handling in LR: it still can be an issue unless you drop the detail slider, and ultimately Fuji files still look better in C1.

No matter what I do there is always a slight hitch in moving a slider and seeing results (I’m on a six month old top of the line speced out MBP the machine is not the issue). In C1 I would have had to re mask her every single time, in LR I had in under a minute done the mask across like 20 photosĢ) Performance: C1 just is slower. Recently I had a set where the bride’s dress really popped the highlights in the first look, so I hit mask, select person, dropped the exposure maybe. In Lightroom masking is so quick and easy now it’s a delight. A few months ago I switched back for a few reasons:ġ) AI masking: this is such a game changer and capture one is ridiculous with the brush that never gets anything right.

For some context i am a full time wedding photographer (who uses Fujifilm). Everything is way too small and cramped, and you don't have access to all the editing tools like you do in C1. The layers panel in LR is abysmal compared to the one in C1.

Select Subject is ok in Lightroom, but brushing an outline around the subject in C1, then using Fill Mask and Refine Mask is just as good. IMO it also seems like Lightroom has a better selection of presets, too. I am only a hobbyist photographer and am tempted by some of the time-saving features in Lightroom like the AI masking and mobile editing. One big catalog allows you to use all the DAM features to their full extent. There is no reason to change the way you do it if you switch software. This is not a Lightroom vs Capture One issue. How are you handling the file management? (One big catalog, one catalog for every year?)

I do all of my professional work in Capture One and all my personal work in Lightroom. Has anyone done the move back to Lightroom? I'm really not in love with Lightroom's new features, and of course it's been subscription only for many years. I know there has been some general unhappiness with C1 regarding lack of new features and the push towards subscriptions. The file organization in sessions makes a lot of sense to me and I like that I can have these standalone folders that can be easily moved around.
